You might have noticed that we’ve had Ragnar on the brain around here; our love for the team adventure race should be clear. You might need more coaxing, though, to lace up your kicks and jump in a van.
Only at a Ragnar can you bond with 11 other women as you run three legs spanning day and night, sleep under the stars, and joke about zombies -- and only during Ragnar Adirondacks can you do all of that while taking in get views of the majestic Hudson River and the equally majestic Lake Placid. (Yup, home of two Olympic Games!) It’s the most fun you can have in the dark in running shoes with a big bunch of other mother runners!
Wanna know what it’s really like? Ask Meg, who just ran Ragnar Cape Cod.
“When a Facebook running group posted that they were looking to put together a team, I instantly replied saying I was in! I casually knew two of the other women signing up -- but it was mostly a loosely connected group. As other people started expressing interest, it became clear that it was going to be an all-women team. The idea of two vans full of BAMRs was a big motivator.
"I work the night shift so I wasn't anxious about not sleeping. I was worried that I would somehow let my team down or be the weakest link. After a group planning meeting and a group run, it was clear that these women were there for the same reasons I was: We had no delusions of winning, and we all just wanted to run. As the race got closer, the logistics of eating, sleeping, and pooping gave me the most anxiety. What would I pack to eat, when and where would we eat, and how would the strange eating schedule affect my running?
"Some of the best memories were the night running, and I'm not alone in feeling that way. I will most remember the exchanges, where we got to cheer on the teammate coming in and the one going out. We had props for photos at the exchanges -- inflatable bats for the runner "on deck" because our team name was "A Leg of Their Own." We also had blow-up lobsters (“All the Way” Mae and Dottie) dressed in onesies that matched our team shirts. "
"Being with 11 other mother runners for 30+ hours allows for a unique bonding experience. We had so much in common between our love for our family and our drive to carve out running time for ourselves, we all just 'got' each other. It is an exhausting, exhilarating experience that gives you a sense of such pride for having achieved this amazing accomplishment and there are 11 other people that share that same sense of pride, which makes you uniquely bonded forever.
I am torn between signing up for another one right away because it was such an amazing experience and never doing another one because I don't know if it could ever live up to my first time. I guess only time will tell."
Are you ready to run your first (or second or twentieth) Ragnar yet? Or do you need a little somethin-somethin’ to sweeten the deal even more?
We’re giving away a team entry for Ragnar Adirondacks. Winners will also receive entry into our Train Like a Mother Ragnar plan, a sampler of GU, Nuun, Balega, Hyland's Calms Forte + Good Morning tablets, and CEP compression socks. We’re going to outfit the team, too. Each winner will get her choice of a BAMR tattoo tank, short sleeve tech tee, or long-sleeve tech tee from the Mother Runner Store, and a Tough Girl Tutu.
We need 14 women to fill the team (twelve will be chosen to be on the team; two will be alternates in case the unexpected befalls you). Before we get to how we'll do that, here are a few very important details:
What is not included in winning: transportation to and from the race; hotel before or after the race; vans + gas for the race; meals before, during, and after the race. Sarah and Dimity won’t be part of the prize because, alas, both will be at the AMR Retreat in Spokane that same weekend.
Dates: Race is September 22-23, 2017. You need to be in Saratoga Springs, NY, by 3 p.m. EDT on September 21 and, depending on where you're coming from, you will likely not be able to head home until September 24.
All we ask is you be creative and tell us why you want to run Ragnar Adirondacks with a team of BAMRs. Do what you can with the time and resources you have.
So you can make a video; paint a picture; decorate a poster; collage some photos; knit a sweater; do a dance; design a team uniform; plant some flowers in BAMR style; whatever works for you. (Need some inspiration? Check out the entries from last year: Team Dimity + Team Sarah.)
Sarah and Dimity will pick the winners based on originality and presentation.
Post it on YouTube, Instagram, Facebook, etc., with the tag #AMRRunsRagnar and email the link to us at bamr@anothermotherrunner.com with "Ragnar Entry" in the subject line, please.
We need to receive all entries by June 12 at 11:59 p.m. PDT. We will announce the 14 winners (12 runners + 2 alternate) on June 22 on our website.
Absolutely not! But you definitely need to be a fun runner: We value entertainment way more than we value speed. That said, by the time the race rolls around, you need to be able to capably cover the combined distance of the various legs. The shortest is 13; the longest is just over 20. Remember you will get a free 12-week Train Like a Mother Plan tailored for running Ragnars.
Not this year, since we only have one team. One mother runner per entry, please. (And don't worry about showing up solo. As the mother runners who joined us last year prove on a daily basis: You'll make friends quickly and meaningfully faster than you ever have in your life. That's the beauty of Ragnar.)
